Items of interest at the Jan. 15 City Council meeting included:
- Resolution to apply for a $500,000 state grant for improvements to Riverfront Park. Recommended improvements include a new water fountain, removing the existing raised platform and replacing it with a new walkway, seating and planters, as well as repairs to the supporting bulkhead underneath the Riverwalk. Construction for the project, estimated to cost $2.8 million, is expected to begin this spring.
- Final vote on funding for repairs to the Water Street parking deck; Council gave preliminary approval at their Jan. 8 meeting. The repairs would provide for use of the deck for 3-5 years while the city evaluates long-term options for redevelopment of the property. Funding for this project was previously approved and budgeted, but final approval will allow specific repairs that have now been identified to move forward.
- Resolution to extend the current agreement with Harmony Hospitality, Inc., the city’s convention center hotel developer. The current agreement ends on Jan. 31, but Harmony is requesting an extension until April 30 so that financing and franchise approvals can be finalized. Harmony has already submitted preliminary plans to build a $33.6 million, 186-room Embassy Suites as the convention center hotel. The proposed 163,000-square-foot, all-suite hotel will be about the same height as the nearby Hilton Hotel.
