Prescribed burn a success

A prescribed burn took place on Friday, Feb. 1 at Halyburton Park. Approximately 30 acres of the park were burned. Halyburton Park is located at 4099 S. 17th Street. 

The park is expected to re-open at about 5 p.m. after the clean-up is complete. 

Prescribed burns are planned fires that burn undergrowth in a controlled manner to minimize the risk of wild fires. While removing undergrowth, the prescribed burn will make it easier for native plant species such as the Long Leaf Pine and Wiregrass to grow and also improve the habitat in the park for wildlife. Prescribed fires generally take place at certain times of the year in specific weather conditions. 

This was the third prescribed burn at Halyburton. The burn was conducted by the N.C. Forest Service (NCFS) and the Wilmington Fire Department (WFD). Personnel from NCFS and the WFD were on site at all times.
