Changes to voluntary annexation policy
Changes to voluntary annexation policy

At their Feb. 19 meeting, City Council passed a resolution which will change the city's voluntary annexation policy.
Any future requests for annexations into the city that don't touch existing city limits will not be accepted within six months if New Hanover County has already denied a special use permit or zoning changes.
Voluntary annexations occur when property owners petition the city for inclusion within its limits. They can be non-contiguous (or satellite) or contiguous. Contiguous voluntary annexations involve property which touches the city limits, while non-contiguous property does not touch the city limits at all.
Council had been discussing proposed changes for several months.
