The Wilmington Tree Commission will hold a celebration to commemorate NC Arbor Day on Friday, March 22 at 10 a.m. in Wade Park, located at 3500 Bethel Road. The group will plant a Southern Magnolia in the park.
The Tree Commission named the period from March 22 to April 26 as "Arbor Month." The month will be capped off by National Arbor Day on April 26.
Wilmington has just been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This is the 10th consecutive year Wilmington has received this national recognition. To become a Tree City USA, a community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance. In addition, the city has received the Tree City USA Growth Award for the 8th consecutive year. This award recognizes environmental improvement and effective tree maintenance.
