Human Resources FAQs


Where are you located and what are your hours?
We are located at 305 Chestnut Street, 1st floor, Wilmington, NC. The hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Can I get a copy of my application from Human Resources?
Applicants are encouraged to make a copy of their applications prior to submitting to Human Resources.

Where can I get information on the Police Department?
You can get general information by visiting www.Wilmingtonpd.org. If you are interesting in applying for a Police Officer or Cadet position and it is not currently being posted, you can call the Human Resources office at 910-341-7840 to get an employment interest card filled out for you.

What are the requirements for the Fire Department?
FIREFIGHTER INFORMATION
To qualify, an applicant must possess a High School Diploma or GED, be at least 21 years of age and possess and have maintained a satisfactory driving record.  Applicants will be required to successfully complete the following:

  • Aptitude Test
  • Background Investigation
  • Strength and Agility Test
  • Oral Interview
  • Pass City's driving standard
  • Criminal/Credit history check
  • And other posted requirements

To be considered, a City of Wilmington employment application must be completed and forwarded to Human Resources before 5:00 PM on the closing date for the posted vacancy.

Do not forward a completed application for the position of firefighter unless we have posted such a vacancy.


Photocopies of the following documents and those requested in the actual job announcement must be included with your application for firefighter:

  • Birth Certificate
  • High School Diploma, High School Transcript or GED Certificate
  • Current Driver's License
  • Documents of related training (if applicable) and other posted required documents

Failure to provide copies of all the required documentation with the application will disqualify candidates from consideration. Comprehensive benefits package including an additional 4.5% contribution to 401k or 457 plan. 

If you are interesting in applying for a Firefighter position and it is not currently being posted, you can call the Human Resources office at 910-341-7840 to get an employment interest card filled out for you.

Can I just send in my resume to apply for a position?

A City of Wilmington application is required for each position that you are interested in applying for and a resume can be attached to supplement the application, but not as a replacement.

Can I apply for more than one position with the same application?
Yes, you can apply for as many positions as you like, but you will need to complete a separate application for each position of interest.
