The Wilmington Fire Department held a pumping exercise for 16 firefighters as part of a promotion process on August 28. Several promotions are currently available because of three new staff positions added to the department as part of the city’s new budget. Eligible personnel demonstrated their fire response pumping proficiency at the department's Training Center on West Lake Shore Drive. Other components of the promotional process included a written test, oral interview and driving exercise.
The city's new budget, adopted by City Council in June, includes three new positions that address recommendations made in the recent assessment of the department for additional training and administrative support.
The department anticipates making the promotions from entry level firefighter to the rank of fire engineer in early September. The testing process for promotions takes place once every two years. Also, the department has a training for entry level firefighters starting on September 4. The Recruit Academy takes place roughly once every two years, or as vacancies demand. There will be 17 people taking part in the Recruit Academy, which will begin on September 4th, running for 18 weeks.
