Traffic signals removed on portions of N. Front St.

Traffic signals on North Front Street at the intersections of Princess and Chestnut streets will be removed on Friday, April 24 and replaced with all-way stop-signs. This change has already been in effect during a 45-day trial period in which the signals were covered, however on Friday, they will be permanently removed.

During the trial period, city staff observed the intersections and found no problems that would warrant keeping the signals. The replacement of the signals with all-way stop signs is the first step in the planned North Front Street improvement project that is designed to make the street more pedestrian-friendly so visitors will be more likely to get out and walk and frequent downtown businesses.

The North Front Street Streetscape project will include the installation of underground utilities, as well as improvements to lighting, landscaping, the street and sidewalks. Construction, which is expected to last 6 to 8 months, is planned to begin in October.
