City firefighters help Habitat for Humanity

At left is Wilmington Fire Department Engineer Chad Chandler assisting with the installation of residential fire sprinklers at a Habitat for Humanity house in Wilmington.

A group of Wilmington firefighters volunteered their time on March 23 to install fire sprinkers in two new Habitat for Humanity houses under construction off Manly Avenue. The WFD firefighters worked with students from the University of Chicago and Harvard University who are helping Habitat with construction during their spring break.

The residential fire sprinklers are installed at no cost to new homeowners or Habitat for Humanity. All materials are provided at no cost by the manufacturers. Assistance is also provided by local sprinkler contractors. According to the WFD, installing sprinklers and working smoke alarms reduces the risk of fire fatalities or injuries by 80 percent.

For more information about residential fire sprinklers, contact the WFD at 343-3939.
