Mayor Bill Saffo announced that the city received another $2 million in federal stimulus funding for Phase III of the Cross-City Trail. The city also received $2 million last year for Phases I and II, bringing the city’s total to $4 million in federal funding for the trail.
The mayor made the announcement at a groundbreaking ceremony at UNCW hosted by Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. State Department of Transportation officials, who helped secure the federal funding, were also in attendance.
Phase III will stretch from South College Road to Mallard Drive through the UNCW campus and will connect sidewalks and bicycle lanes along Randall Parkway with Mallard Drive at Hooker Road. The trail will then move through Autumn Hall and connect with the already completed portion on Eastwood Road. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
Almost five miles of the Cross-City Trail are already complete or under construction, and this phase will add another three miles. When complete, the Cross-City Trail will be approximately 20 miles long and stretch from Wade Park in the Monkey Junction area to the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge.
