County declares State of Emergency

Tropical Storm Nicole - Update 1 (Revised) 7PM

Here is the latest information on Tropical Storm Nicole, from the New Hanover County Emergency Management Office:

  • State of Emergency Declared at 1:00pm today
  • New Hanover County Schools closed Thursday
  • All Courts (District/Superior) in New Hanover and Pender Counties will be closed Thursday
  • Emergency evacuation shelter has been established at Eaton Elementary School, 6701 Gordon Road. NO food service will be available this evening.  Please deliver pets to NHC Animal Control Services first.  ACS staff will be available at Eaton Elementary to pick up pets.
  • UNC-Wilmington has cancelled classes for this evening. All classes are to resume on Thursday.
  • All New Hanover County Parks and Airlie Gardens will be closed to the public at 5:00 today and will remain closed Thursday.  The Airlie Gardens Concert for Friday is cancelled.
  • New Hanover County offices will be open as usual on Thursday.
  • Continue to monitor local media or NOAA weather radio for further information.

New Hanover County Declares State of Emergency & Prepares for Tropical Storm Nicole

Effective at 1:00 p.m. today, a State of Emergency is in effect for all of New Hanover County.  Due to the approach of Tropical Storm Nicole, New Hanover County will operate one evacuation shelter for persons seeking safety from rising water.  The shelter will be open at 5:30 today at Eaton Elementary School, 6701 Gordon Road.  NO food service will be available at the shelter.  Persons are advised to bring food/snacks.

Persons with pets who seek emergency shelter should first drop their animals at NHC Animal Control Services.  Shelter personnel will also be on hand at Eaton Elementary School to receive pets and deliver them to the shelter.

As of 2:00 this afternoon, all county offices will operate on a normal schedule for the remainder of today and tomorrow.
