Independence widening complete

Independence Boulevard was completed and reopened to traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians in December.

The $6.4 million road widening project began in June 2009. The project was funded by the 2006 Transportation Bond and city capital project funds.

Almost 2 miles of Independence Boulevard was widened from two to four lanes between Shipyard Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road to provide motorists with an alternative route to travelling on busy South College Road.

This project included the extension of Museum Drive from the Cameron Art Museum to Independence Boulevard as well as a section of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail between the Cameron Art Museum and Croquet Drive. Also, there are three pedestrian crossings points at the intersections of Carolina Beach Road, 17th Street and Ashton Drive. Additionally, bike lanes in the southbound direction and and shared lanes in the northbound direction were included as part of the project.
