Convention Center opens

The Wilmington Convention Center officially opened on January 13 with a ribbon-cutting attended by more than 300 local residents. Located on the downtown riverfront next to the historic Coastline Convention Center on Nutt Street, the center began operation in November. Several events have already been held there and 85 additional events and conventions are scheduled.

At more than 107,000 square feet, the facility is the largest convention center on the North Carolina coast. The center and adjacent 580-space parking deck began construction in 2008. Along with multiple meeting rooms and a 30,000-square-foot exhibit hall, the center features large-scale photos of Wilmington's maritime history as well as green building features such as solar panels and water saving devices. The $59 million project was completed $4 million under budget. The construction and operation of the convention center is funded by a specially designated 3% hotel room tax.
