||A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the next phase of the Gary Shell Cross‐City Trail on December 15.
This phase includes a bridge over the headwaters of Bradley Creek from the end of Teal Street in the College Acres neighborhood to the edge of the Autumn Hall property. The next section of trail, running from the bridge through Autumn Hall and connecting to the trail on Eastwood Road, will begin construction in spring, 2012.
This section of the trail is expected to be complete in the spring and is being constructed at a cost of $283,000. The NC Department of Transportation will contribute $250,000 and the remaining amount will come from the 2006 voter-approved parks bond.
Approximately 11 miles of the Cross‐City Trail are already complete. The entire Cross‐City Trail, when complete, will be approximately 15 miles long and stretch from Wade Park to the Wrightsville Beach Drawbridge.
