Household hazardous waste day

      The City of Wilmington, along with the Environmental Management Department of New Hanover County, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority, the Town of Wrightsville Beach, Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture will host a Household Hazardous Waste day on Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the customs building at the Wilmington International Airport. 

The event will be held rain or shine for New Hanover County residents only.

The following items will be accepted:
  • Auto batteries
  • Cell phones
  • Household cleaners
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Fuels
  • Solvents
  • Smoke detectors
  • Mercury
  • Motor oil & antifreeze
  • Pesticides & herbicides
  • Electronics (TVs, computers, etc.)
  • Rechargeable household batteries
  • Fertilizers
The following items will NOT be accepted:
  • Paint
  • Ammunition
  • Asbestos
  • Industrial materials
  • Appliances
  • Furniture 
  • Medications
  • Propane gas cylinders
  • Trash
  • Tires
  • Commercial/business waste
  • Hypodermic needles 

Improper disposal of household hazardous waste is harmful to our health and natural resources. It can pollute our streams, rivers, drinking water and groundwater and can also interfere with the treatment process at the landfill and wastewater treatment plants.
