Firefighter memorial groundbreaking

The Wilmington Fire Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Wilmington Firefighters Memorial on September 11. The event took place at the new Empie Park Fire Station.

A moment of silence was taken for those firefighters and victims who lost their lives on 9-11. The seven WFD firefighters who have died in the line duty were also honored.

The ceremony officially marks the beginning of fundraising and construction efforts for a $250,000 memorial. The memorial itself will be outlined in the shape of a fire helmet with a 6-foot bronze statue holding a steel artifact obtained from the World Trade Center collapse as a center piece. Around the exterior will be seven bronze statues in the form of a helmet, axe and boots. Three flag poles, five benches and several garden spots will make up the interior of the memorial.
