City Council Meeting Feb. 5

Tuesday, Feb. 5, City Council meeting, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall

Items of interest on the agenda included:

  • Ordinance requesting $309,595 to create a Mobile Field Force (MFF) within the Wilmington Police Department. If approved, the WPD would establish a 12-officer unit that would be able to respond quickly to crime, or fear of crime, anywhere in the city. The ordinance would provide funding for staffing for the remainder of this fiscal year, as well as start-up equipment and patrol cars.

The WPD reports that while the city’s crime rate continued to drop in 2012 and remains at historic lows, there is a trend of crimes such as burglaries and robberies moving from one neighborhood to another. This follows on the heels of several successful targeted crime prevention efforts by the WPD. Those efforts will continue and this unit would complement existing strategies such as dedicated neighborhood patrol officers in designated areas throughout the city. The unit would have two teams – one team of six uniformed patrol officers and another team of six undercover officers. If funding is approved, the unit is expected to be operational sometime this spring.

  • Resolution to hire two full-time staff members for the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization's (WMPO) new Transportation Management Area (TMA) designation. The WMPO recently was elevated to the TMA designation because, according to the most recent US Census, the Wilmington Urbanized Area now exceeds 200,000. The TMA designation requires more frequent updating of many documents and the administration of the state’s Surface Transportation Program funding. Most funding for the additional positions come the state, with $5,776 in matching city funds for this fiscal year.

Watch the entire meeting.

The next Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 19. The agenda for the next meeting will be posted on the city's website on Friday, February 15.
