Randall Parkway update

The Randall Parkway widening project continues to move forward on schedule. When complete in 2014, this project will alleviate heavy traffic in the vicinity of Kerr Ave. and College Rd. and add capacity for future traffic growth along the entire parkway.

Most of the work is currently taking place on the western section of Randall (between S. Kerr Ave. and Independence Blvd.) adjacent to the pond. In this phase of the project, major portions of the new eastbound traffic lane are complete, as are drainage improvements and installation of some of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail.

The relocation of utilities is still underway on the eastern side of Randall Parkway (between S. Kerr Ave. and College Rd.). This section of the road will also be widened, but not until much of the western portion is complete.

The project also extends the Cross-City Trail from just past the Randall Pond bridge to Marlboro Dr. and adds bike lanes on both sides of the road between Collegiate Dr. and College Rd. The Cross-City Trail will be added to the center section of Randall where it crosses S. Kerr Ave. between Marlboro and Collegiate drives when the NCDOT begins the Kerr Ave. widening project later in 2014.

More than half of the Randall project’s $5.6 million budget comes from federal and state monies with most of the remaining funding coming from the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond.
