Recycling program a success!

Go BLUE to go GREEN!

Almost 21,700 city trash customers now also recycle – an increase of more than 50% since last spring when the city began discussing the new blue carts and biweekly recycling schedule. The new biweekly program saves the city more than $220,000 each year.

As of last spring, fewer than half of the city's approximately 30,000 trash customers chose to recycle. Now more than 72% recycle.

While participation growth was expected as cart delivery began in November, the number of new customers signing up was much higher than expected.

The amount of material being recycled continues to increase as well. Not only is recycling better for the environment, it also saves money. It costs the city $59 per ton to put trash in the county landfill versus $20 per ton to recycle it.
