Riverwalk gets repairs

Repair work for a section of the Riverwalk at the foot of Market Street began on April 15. A large barge had to be anchored on the river at the foot of Market Street since there was no room to set up a work site on land.

The work involves replacing or repairing 58 steel support beams under the Riverwalk. The observation deck and nearby Water/Market Street intersection will also be repaired. A crane will be used to lift the heavy beams into place. Most of the work will take place in the water below the Riverwalk using workers from a company specially trained in underwater repair work.

In addition, the tree planter and three oak trees nearby had to be removed. A temporary walkway will be installed until the Water Street and Riverfront Park Improvement project takes place next year. Some intermittent closures of the Riverwalk in this area are expected. The $637,000 project is part of the city’s 5-Year Infrastructure Improvement Plan.

The project is expected to be complete later this summer.
