Alderman Park in bloom

The Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden, located in Alderman Park, is in full bloom.

Alderman Park is the city's newest park and is located at 3800 Canterbury Road, off Independence Boulevard next to Alderman Elementary School.

The ADA accessible passive park features a pervious concrete walking trail, wooden observation decks, and a collection of native carnivorous plants such as Pitcher Plants and Venus Flytraps. "Pervious" pavement allows stormwater runoff water to soak into the ground, where it is filtered and cleaned by the soil. Regular pavement is “impervious,” which means the stormwater runs off the hard surface untreated into area waterways.
Development of the park was mostly funded by the voter-approved 2006 Parks and Open Space Bond, and was made possible through a partnership between the city, Alderman Elementary the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, and the Oleander Company.
