Hurricane preparation tips

New Hanover County is the lead agency during any storm or emergency. Visit for tips and information from New Hanover County Emergency Services.

In preparation for the storm, the city is lowering the water level in Greenfield Lake, clearing debris from problem areas, checking for clogged storm drains and placing barricades at streets that are prone to flooding.

Things you can do before, during and after a storm:
  • To minimize flooding on your property, clear any debris in your yard to prevent it from blocking a storm drain.
  • Store or secure your roll-away trash and recycling carts. These items could become projectiles and cause damage or injury.
  • Stay away from any low hanging or downed power lines. These should always be considered to be live and highly dangerous. Call Duke Energy Progress immediately at (800) 769-3766 if you see a line down.
  • Citizens are encouraged to stay indoors and off the roadways during a storm. If you have to be on the road, remember that there is a 4-way stop at intersections with traffic lights without power.
  • If you have to be on the roads, do not attempt to cross any ponding on the roadways - either on foot or in a vehicle. Remember, turn around and don't drown.
  • Your emergency kit should include fresh batteries, a portable radio, flashlight, first-aid kit, canned or packaged food that can be prepared without cooking or refrigeration and a supply of drinking water.
  • If you know someone who depends on electronic life support equipment, be sure you have a back-up generator or evacuation plan in the event of a power outage.
