New fire truck in service!

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 |  1:30 p.m. at Empie Park Fire Station

The Wilmington Fire Department and some helpful residents rolled the new Rescue 2 fire truck into service on June 26 at the Empie Park Fire Station.

The Rescue 2 is one of two heavy rescue trucks in WFD's fleet that houses specialized equipment necessary for technical rescue situations such as auto accidents requiring vehicle extrication, building collapses, confined space rescue and rope rescues.

Rescue trucks carry an array of special equipment such as thermal imaging camera, light tower, jaws of life, winches, hi-lift jacks and other forms of heavy equipment not included on traditional pumper or ladder trucks.

This truck has twice the storage capacity of the one it is replacing and also has significant safety improvements, including front and side air bags/curtains. The funding for this truck was approved in the 2012-2013 budget as part of the fleet replacement fund.
