WPD welcomes new officers


Honor Guard  
     

The Wilmington Police Department held a Promotion and Swearing-in Ceremony on Friday, June 28.

The city and the WPD welcomes newly-sworn officers Joseph Clark, Robert Ferencak, James Joachim (auxiliary officer), William Rose, David Savage, Aricka Sidbury, Matthew Thompson and Deborah Wolfson.

Congratulations to Deputy Chief Mitch Cunningham, Sergeant Kelly Sipe, Sergeant Matt Malone, Sergeant Alanna Williams, Corporal Carlos Lamerty, Corporal Tyler Braswell, Corporal Selma Keaton and Corporal William Young on their promotions. 

In addition, congratulations to Officer Ian Lovell, Corporal Kenneth Becker and Officer Kevin Getman, all recipients of Medal of Valor Awards.

Medal of Valor Awards

Investigator Ian Lovell
On January 29, 2013, Investigator Lovell was involved in a traffic stop in attempt to serve a warrant on a wanted suspect. During the stop, the passenger fled on foot and was pursued by Investigator Lovell. The driver remained in the vehicle, but after being approached by other officers, pulled out a handgun and an exchange of gunfire took place. After firing at officers, the suspect ran in the direction of Investigator Lovell. Investigator Lovell challenged the suspect who then raised his weapon and Investigator Lovell fired at and wounded the suspect who was later taken into custody. Investigator Lovell's actions were in the finest tradition of the Wilmington Police Department and deserve him the Medal of Valor.

Corporal Kenneth Becker
On January 29, 2013, Corporal Becker was involved in a traffic stop in attempt to serve a warrant on a wanted suspect. During the stop, the passenger fled on foot, and was pursued by Investigator Lovell. The driver remained in the vehicle but after being approached by Corporal Becker, pulled out a handgun and fired shots at Corporal Becker and Officer Getman. Corporal Becker exchanged gunfire with the suspect before the suspect ran in the direction that Investigator Lovell had chased the passenger. Corporal Becker alerted Investigator Lovell of the approaching suspect. Corporal Becker's actions were in the finest tradition of the Wilmington Police Department and deserve him the Medal of Valor.

Officer Kevin Getman
On January 29, 2013, Officer Getman was involved in a traffic stop in attempt to serve a warrant on a wanted suspect. During the stop, the passenger fled on foot, and was pursued by Investigator Lovell. The driver remained in the vehicle but after being approached by officers, pulled out a handgun and fired shots at Officer Getman and Corporal Becker. Officer Getman was able to get to a safe location before gunfire was exchanged with the suspect. The suspect fled on foot in the direction of Investigator Lovell who wounded the suspect. Officer Getman's actions were in the finest tradition of the Wilmington Police Department and deserve him the Medal of Valor.
