City Council meeting, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall
Items of interest on the agenda included:
- A presentation from staff that will highlight the city's energy and waste reduction efforts, including the Streetsweeper facility, the LEED Convention Center, the recycling program and the Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant.
- A public hearing on the potential rezoning of 302 acres of vacant land along South 17th Street to a variety of uses, including multi-family, office and institutional, regional business, and community business uses. The recommended rezoning was passed unanimously by the Wilmington Planning Commission. This item was continued to the August 6, 2013 City Council meeting.
- A resolution to accept a $30,000 grant from NC DENR. The grant, which requires a $6,000 city match, will enable the city to enhance the recycling program at Greenfield Amphitheater, the Municipal Golf Course, Halyburton Park, the Empie Park Tennis area and Legion Stadium. The funds will be used to purchase semi-permanent cart garages to house the “Big Blue” recycling roll-out carts.
- A resolution to enter into an agreement with NCDOT for the Construction of a Public Walkway under the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge that will connect with the Gary Shell Cross City Trail. The NCDOT is contributing $250,000 toward the design of the walkway. When design is complete, the remaining funds will be applied toward construction of the walkway, which is expected to open in 2015. The City is in the process of completing the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail, a 15-mile core trail in a developing County-wide Greenway System, which will make basic transportation in Wilmington a safer, more convenient option for every citizen.
