Flooding expected this weekend

Due to heavy rains expected today and tomorrow coupled with near record rainfalls in recent weeks, flooding is anticipated in our area.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the potential for areal and river flooding will increase through the weekend. A flood watch is in effect through midnight tonight, but will likely be extended into Saturday later today. River flooding will become an issue. Five area rivers are already at flood stage and will be impacted by the additional rainfall. Moderate flooding is expected on some area rivers.

In preparation, the water level in Greenfield Lake and Randall Pond has been lowered, debris cleared from problem areas and clogged storm drains and barricades have been placed at streets that are prone to flooding.

Things you can do to help prevent flooding:
  • Clear any debris in your yard to prevent it from blocking a storm drain.
  • Citizens are encouraged to stay indoors and off the roadways.
  • If you have to be on the roads, do not attempt to cross any ponding on the roadways - either on foot or in a vehicle. Remember, turn around and don't drown.
