||The city is now working on preliminary designs for two new fire stations. This spring, the city began implementing a plan to relocate four of its fire stations and build two new stations in order to help improve response times to emergencies in more up-to-date facilities.
Station #3 on Princess Place Drive, Station #4 on Wallace Drive, Station #5 Wellington Avenue and Station #6 on Carolina Beach Road will be consolidated into two new stations in centralized locations to improve efficiency.
Station #3 on Cinema Drive will be the first new station built; design is expected to be completed later this year with construction beginning in early 2014. After it is complete, construction will begin later in 2014 on a new Station #5 on Shipyard Boulevard, near Carolina Beach Road. This will replace aging stations on Wellington Avenue and Carolina Beach Road.
The city already owns the land for both new fire stations and much of the construction and purchase costs are being funded through savings from other city construction projects completed under budget.
