Crime lab receives accreditation

The Wilmington Police Department is the only one of its kind in Southeastern NC. The lab recently received its International Accreditation from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board. Police Chief Ralph Evangelous says "This accreditation is a great accomplishment for our agency. It puts us on a level with state and nationally recognized labs such as the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration).

The accreditation also helps the agency to meet the requirements of a new state law which only allows accredited labs to perform forensic analysis for evidence admitted in state courts. The Wilmington Police Department is one of four publicly funded labs in the state with this accreditation. The Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department, Wake County City-County Bureau of Identification and the NC State Crime Laboratory have also received their accreditations.
