The concrete foundation has been poured on the firefighter memorial to be located at the Empie Park fire station. The installation of various pieces of the memorial is expected to take place during the weeks of Aug. 26 and Sept. 2.

A public unveiling and ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the Empie Fire Station.

The memorial will honor the seven Wilmington firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty since the department began in the mid 1800s, as well as the 343 NYC firefighters who perished during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack. The seven statues representing Wilmington’s fallen firefighters will hold a piece of steel recovered from the 9-11 World Trade Center attack.

Cost of the memorial and installation is being funded through donations. Fundraising is ongoing, with about 80% of the $250,000 goal complete.
