Firefighter memorial under construction
Work continues on the Firefighter Memorial to be located at the Empie Park fire station. Cost of the memorial and installation is being funded through donations. Fundraising is ongoing, with about 80 percent of the $250,000 goal complete. The Fire Department will hold a volleyball tournament fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill. More information is available at

The public is invited to attend the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Empie Fire Station. The memorial will honor the seven Wilmington firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty since the department began in the mid 1800s, as well as the 343 NYC firefighters who perished during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack. The seven statues representing Wilmington’s fallen firefighters will hold a piece of steel recovered from the 9-11 World Trade Center attack.
