Since the City of Wilmington introduced new blue recycling carts almost a year ago, the number of citizens who choose to take part in the city’s voluntary recycling program has significantly increased. Before the program, fewer than half of all city trash customers recycled. Now, more than 80 percent of all customers are recycling.
In addition, the amount of material being recycling has increased by 15.4 percent in the first three quarters of 2013, as compared to the same period last year. The amount of trash going into the New Hanover County landfill has also been steadily decreasing.
City trash customers began receiving the new blue recycling carts in Nov. 2012 and the bi-weekly recycling schedule began in Jan. 2013, saving the city approximately $220,000 each year.
