Kenan Fountain lighting

On Nov. 18, City of Wilmington staff presented their recommendation to the City Council for lighting improvements to the historic Kenan Fountain. The fountain is located at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Market Street.

City staff is recommending the proposal from Musco Lighting of Iowa for several reasons:

  • Illuminates the fountain and the intersection
  • Lights the pedestrian crosswalks
  • Keeps drivers' eyes focused on the intersection
  • Less long-term maintenance

In October, City Council saw a demonstration for lighting improvements from Graybar and Musco Lighting. Some initial lighting improvements were made earlier this year after the fountain was struck by a car, but the new improvements would provide more extensive, permanent upgrades.

The improvements from Musco are estimated to cost between $50,000-$60,000. City Council is expected to take action on funding for the improvements in early 2014.
