Citizens give input about Wilmington’s future


After four neighborhood planning meetings with well over 200 citizens participating, the City of Wilmington has published a summary of input citizens have provided to date about how the city should grow. 

The city is developing a long-term plan for growth to help deal with coming social and demographic changes that will change the face of Wilmington. The city’s geographic area has been divided up into 12 general planning areas with public input meetings planned for each one. Four meetings have been held, with two more scheduled for January, 2014. Here’s what residents are telling the city so far:

What citizens like most about their neighborhood:
  1. Parks, natural areas, trails, trees, and open spaces 
  2. Residential character and family atmosphere
  3. Neighborhood
  4. Neighborhood schools
  5. Entertainment venues

What citizens would most like to change:
  1. Better traffic calming in their neighborhoods
  2. More crosswalks, sidewalks and bike lanes
  3. Increased safety with improved lighting, signage and more police patrols
  4. Reduced crime, code violations and littering
  5. Improved traffic flow on major roadways
       

Most common “Big Ideas” from citizens: 

  1. More parks and recreation opportunities
  2. More sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, trails and corridor crossings
  3. More neighborhood businesses and mixed-use developments
  4. Improved traffic flow on major roadways
  5. Improved streetscapes
