Traditional tree lighting

The Rotary Wheel at Greenfield Lake is the new site for the city’s long-standing holiday tree lighting tradition, including a celebration coordinated with the local Rotary Club on Thursday, Dec. 5. The wheel is located across from the Greenfield Amphitheater at 1941 Amphitheater Drive.

Because the old tree at the Sweeney Water Plant has lost almost all its foliage, is no longer capable of supporting lights and has limited access, the Rotary Clubs of Wilmington offered to start a new community tradition at the World’s Largest Rotary Wheel in Greenfield Park. The Rotarians began an overall beautification program at the rotary wheel earlier this year as part of an effort to develop a new version of an old community tradition.

The celebration will kick off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the tree lighting and Santa's arrival at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the holiday movie “A Christmas Story” will be shown at the Greenfield Amphitheater. Concessions will be available, including snacks and hot and cold beverages.

The event is free and open to the public.
