The Wilmington Tree Commission held their annual December Tree Planting on Thursday, December 12 in Empie Park.
This year, the group planted 12 Long Leaf Pines in honor of the 2014 Heritage Tree, "Coastal Conifers." The trees were planted within the park near the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail and the playground.
In 2012, the Wilmington Tree Commission planted 12 donated Long Leaf pine seedlings at a site at the foot of Rosemont Avenue in McCrary Park adjacent to the Cross-City Trail bridge.
The commission promotes the city’s urban forest and coordinates tree-related awards and recognition programs. Wilmington has been named as a Tree City USA for the past ten years as well as the Tree City's Growth Award for the past nine years. The group also supports the city’s urban forestry program through activities such as tree plantings and the city's Arbor Day celebration.
