Randall Pkwy ribbon cutting

The City of Wilmington will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the upcoming completion of the Randall Parkway Widening Project on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. in Anne McCrary Park on Randall Parkway near Randall Pond.

Birchwood Drive closed Dec. 16

Birchwood Drive, a popular cut-through between N. Kerr Ave. and Princess Place Dr., will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. on Dec. 16 so that city crews can remove a dead pine tree. The city expects the work to be complete by early that same afternoon.

Antelope Trail drainage project starts

Report highlights need for affordable housing

Tree planting in Empie Park

The Wilmington Tree Commission will plant 12 Long Leaf Pines in honor of the 2014 Heritage Tree, "Coastal Conifers" on Thursday, December 12 at 12 p.m. in Empie Park. The trees will be planted within the park near the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail and the playground.

Airlie Rd named Scenic Byway

On December 5, the NCDOT designated Airlie Road between Military Cutoff/Oleander Drive and Eastwood Road as one of 57 Scenic Byways in the state.

Holiday Parade on Dec. 8

Join the City of Wilmington for the 11th Annual Holiday Parade on Sunday, Dec. 8 in historic downtown Wilmington! The parade will begin at N. Front and Walnut streets at 5:40 p.m. The reviewing stand will be in Riverfront Park in the 00 block of N. Water Street.

Traditional tree lighting

The Rotary Wheel at Greenfield Lake is the new site for the city’s long-standing tree lighting tradition. The celebration will kick off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the tree lighting and Santa's arrival. At 6:30 p.m., the holiday movie “A Christmas Story” will be shown at the Greenfield Amphitheater. The entire event is free and open to the public.

Land purchased for northern riverfront park
On December 2, as scheduled, the City of Wilmington finalized the purchase of 6.63 acres along the northern downtown riverfront for a passive public park. The property, previously owned by Riverfront Holdings II, is part of a larger piece of the former Almont Shipping Company property. [Read more...]
