Approximately 100 people came out for the 4th community conversation about gang/gun violence, hosted by New Hanover County. NHC County Manager Chris Coudriet facilitated the meeting which was held on Jan. 13.
The focus of the meeting was mental health and behavioral issues of school-aged children that can lead to, or prevent, gang/gun violence, as well as the resources needed to help at-risk children.
At least two other meetings are being planned for early this year will likely wrap up this series of community conversations before final recommendations are developed. One will be hosted by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 22 with a focus on economic development and what businesses can do to help. Another meeting is being planned by the Cape Fear United Way to consider the role non-profits play in combating gun/gang violence.
