On Feb. 17, Council heard an update on the planned improvements to Riverfront Park located in front of the Federal Courthouse on Water Street.
This planned facelift to Riverfront Park will be closely coordinated with upcoming Coast Guard bulkhead repairs and Cape Fear Public Utility Authority improvements under Water Street. Beginning work on the Coast Guard’s repairs has been delayed until 2015 due to funding constraints. Much of the city’s repair work can’t take place until after the Coast Guard’s work is completed, but staff is exploring phasing some portions of the project ahead of the Coast guard repairs.
While the Riverfront Park Master Plan has been approved by City Council, there are still many decisions to be made. The major point of discussion on Feb. 17 centered around safety issues and the best way to balance vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow in a one-block area between Market and Princess Streets. No decisions have been made at this time, but we will keep you posted on this item as more information becomes available.
