City Council Meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 6:30 p.m., City Hall
Items of interest on the agenda included:
- A presentation on possible redevelopment of the city’s Water Street deck. Members of the UNC School of Government's Development Finance Initiative (DFI) will present their recommendations on the best use for the site where the Water Street parking deck is currently located. The city hired DFI to get citizen input and analyze site and market conditions to develop a recommendation about what, from an economic development perspective, is the best use of the property. DFI’s preliminary analysis was presented in November and suggested that there should be a mix of uses on the site, including parking, residential and retail. Once the findings are presented on Tuesday, there will be a three-week public input period before Council revisits the issue on March 18.
- A resolution allocating federal forfeiture funds to purchase equipment for the Wilmington Police Department's Gang Investigative Unit. If approved, the $33,145 will be used to purchase equipment that will aid the unit’s efforts to gather intelligence about local gang activity. The city’s newly formed Gang Investigative Unit will use the intelligence gathered to deter and prosecute criminals as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to decrease gang and gun violence.
