On March 11, the Wilmington Fire Department officially received the "Accredited Agency" status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). There are 30,125 fire departments registered with the United States Fire Administration and fewer than 200 are accredited.
The process, which involved 258 different performance criteria and a visit from peer assessors from the Center of Public Safety Excellence, took more than four years to complete.
Fire Chief Buddy Martinette stated, “I am very proud of our department for this achievement. It is a testament to the professionalism of each man and women that puts on the Wilmington Fire Department uniform and the commitment of City Council to support our efforts. The accomplishment to be an accredited fire department demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality of service to our citizens through a documented process of continuous improvement.”
