FDNY stop off in Wilmington

Eight firefighters traveling by bicycle from New York City will arrive in Wilmington between 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 with an artifact from the World Trade Center. They will stay in Wilmington overnight on their way to Ft. Pierce, FL. to donate the 14-foot steel beam to the UDT Navy SEAL Museum located there.

The riders will travel south on Highway 17 to New Hanover County Fire & Rescue Station 16 in Ogden and then be escorted by the Wilmington Fire Department down Market Street to WFD fire headquarters, located at 801 Market St. The public is encouraged to display support for the riders along the route.

The group will visit the WFD Firefighters’ Memorial at the Empie Park fire station and have dinner there. The WFD memorial also has a steel beam from the World Trade Center, where the 9-11 terrorist bombing occurred. The group will depart for Myrtle Beach on Thursday morning and will be escorted by the WFD.
