Azalea Fest behind the scenes

Many Azalea Festival attendees don't notice the trash disappearing from trash barrels spread throughout the festival area downtown, or notice how the streets magically seem to clean themselves overnight.

This happens because of a hardworking group of city employees who work silently behind the scenes 24 hours a day during the festival, from 5 p.m. on Friday until everything is cleaned up after the festival is over on Sunday.

Last year, employees from the city's trash, stormwater, parks, streets and facilities divisions worked a total of hundreds of hours to clean up almost 50 tons of trash and other debris from the Azalea Festival alone.

If you visit the Azalea Festival this weekend, keep your eyes open for the city staff who are doing their best to keep our city clean, and give them a hand by not littering.
