Students from Friends School of Wilmington and the Cape Fear Community College planted 400 Venus Flytraps on Friday, April 25 in the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden. All 400 plants were propagated from flytraps native to the garden and will help replace the more than 1,000 that were stolen last year.
NC Rep. Ted Davis, who is introducing legislation to make flytrap poaching a felony, was also on hand for the event. City Council will consider a resolution of support for the legislation at their May 6 meeting. The garden is located in the city’s Piney Ridge Nature Preserve behind Alderman Elementary School at 3800 Canterbury Rd.
