National Bike Month gets started in Wilmington with the 25th Annual River to Sea Bike Ride on Saturday, May 3. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Bailey's Park in the 100 block of N. Front Street (between Market and Princess streets). The ride will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The event is a 20-mile (round trip) casual-paced bicycle ride from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach Park on Wilmington's River to Sea Bicycle Route - North Carolina Bike Route 1. Please note, helmets are required.

Light refreshments will be available at Wrightsville Beach Park. Transportation will be provided by WAVE Transit for those who do not want to bike back to downtown Wilmington. Police support will be provided along the way since the ride is mostly on-road in mixed traffic.

Traffic impacts
N. Front Street will be closed from 8 - 8:30 a.m. between Market and Princess streets.

There will be no other road closures; however, due to the large number of cyclists expected, motorists may encounter delays along the route (see map above).

The River to Sea Bikeway is an 11-mile, on- and off-road bicycle route that follows the Historic Beach Car Line, which used to carry vacationers from Downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach by trolley. The bikeway is comprised of neighborhood residential streets, off-road multi-use paths, and a few busy arterial roadways.

Last year, about 250 people joined in for the ride. Help set the record for the most people participating in 25 years!
