On June 17, Police Chief Ralph Evangelous presented a plan to the Wilmington City Council to expand the city's successful community policing program. Community policing involves a series of programs which get officers interacting with the community in face-to-face, prevention-based activities.
During the meeting, Council authorized the city to apply for a $1.2 million community policing grant. The grant would enable the WPD to hire eight officers for four years to work on a gun violence reduction project as part of the overall community policing initiative.
