Construction continues on a 1.3-mile segment of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail that will stretch from Wade Park
, along Bethel Road, Waltmoor Road and South 17th Street
to connect with the existing trail at John D. Barry Drive. The project has been extended to include a new drainage pipe under Waltmoor Road to help prevent flooding that occurs in the area during heavy rains. Combining the construction of the trail with the additional drainage improvements and repaving 17th Street and Waltmoor will allow the city to complete the work with the least amount of disruption to citizens.
Crews expect to begin paving the section of trail between John D. Barry and College Road the week of June 30. The far right northbound lane in the affected area is expected to be closed each day Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The $2.1 million project is funded through a collaborative effort involving the state and federal Departments of Transportation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NC, the city’s 2006 voter-approved parks bond, and the city's 5-year plan to improve infrastructure. The project, which began in December, is now expected to be complete by the end of the year.
