Muni golf course renovations

Crews continued “sprigging” and sodding areas around the greens and bunkers of the City of Wilmington’s municipal golf course this week. The sprigs, which are 3-6 inch grass stems, are hand-planted. In addition, the newly formed bunkers will be receiving fresh sand. Although recent rains slowed the progress of the bunker work and grass installation, it allowed staff to see first-hand how well the new drainage improvements worked.

While contractors work to renovate the greens, bunkers and practice putting green to the original Donald Ross specifications, city golf course staff are repairing other parts of the course, such as the rough, fairways and tee boxes. The greens have doubled in size, and new irrigation, drainage improvements, bunkers and cart paths have been installed.

Despite delays from the weather, the $1.2 million project is still on schedule. The course is expected to be ready for play in October.
