Registration is now underway for the Wilmington Housing Summit that will be held on Sept. 6. The city, in partnership with the Affordable Housing Coalition of Southeastern North Carolina, is hosting the summit, which will be held at the Terraces on Sir Tyler, located at 1826 Sir Tyler Dr.

Beginning this week, a project to make stormwater drainage improvements and repave almost 7 lane miles of city streets in the College area gets underway. One lane mile equals each mile of lanes paved. The $1.2 million project is the first major roadway contract in the city’s Five-Year Improvement Plan, which includes a $41 million list of projects approved by City Council last year.

The city is now working on preliminary designs for two new fire stations. This spring, the city began implementing a plan to relocate four of its fire stations and build two new stations in order to help improve response times to emergencies in more up-to-date facilities.

The City of Wilmington and NC State University have a federal grant to make improvements to help curb polluted stormwater runoff flowing into Burnt Mill Creek. These improvements include recent installations of pavement that allows stormwater to drain through it and rain gardens.

The recent heavy rains have been no match for the city's completed Stormwater projects. Projects totaling over $5 million completed in 2012 alleviate flooding in problem areas and lessen stormwater pollution.
