The Miracle Field at Olsen Park, which is celebrating its first birthday this weekend, is getting a break on its power bill thanks to solar panels installed earlier this year. The donated panels are part of a 9,600-watt system used to offset energy costs for the facility.

Citizens will learn how the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to prioritize various projects in Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender and Sampson counties and be given the chance to provide their input at a public meeting on Thursday, July 31 from 4-7 p.m.

On Thursday, July 10, crews began “sprigging” approximately 12 acres of greens and approaches at the City of Wilmington’s municipal golf course. The sprigs, which are 3-6 inch grass stems, are hand-planted.

The City of Wilmington’s recycling program continues to expand in an effort to reduce landfill waste and save money. At their meeting tonight, the City Council will receive a $25,000 state grant that will be used to add 19 new recycling receptacles to pedestrian areas on North Front and North Third Streets.

The City of Wilmington, in conjunction with New Hanover County, has declared a State of Emergency as of 10 a.m. today.
Sustained heavy winds are expected this afternoon, so administrative City offices will close at 2 p.m.

Construction continues on a 1.3-mile segment of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail that will stretch from Wade Park, along Bethel Road, Waltmoor Road and South 17th Street to connect with the existing trail at John D. Barry Drive.

Citizens are encouraged to drop by Hugh MacRae Park, located at 1799 S College Road, to see a number of informational displays and demonstrations at the 3rd annual Community Safety Expo. The expo will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
