NC Arbor Day celebration
On March 21 at 10 a.m., the Wilmington Tree Commission (WTC) will hold a celebration for NC Arbor Day at Pine Valley Elementary School, located at 440 John S. Mosby Drive. WTC members will plant a large, donated tree at the school and students will showcase artwork, poetry and a song to celebrate the trees of Wilmington. [Read more...]
Race for the Cure traffic impacts
The 2nd Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place in downtown Wilmington on Mar. 1. With 2,000 expected participants, there will be some traffic impacts for those who live or plan to travel downtown on Saturday before 5 p.m. [Read more...]
2014 MLK Parade route
This year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade will be held on Monday, Jan. 20. It will begin at 11 a.m. and follow a different route in response to input from citizens and merchants following last year’s parade. [Read more...]
Holiday Parade on Dec. 8

Join the City of Wilmington for the 11th Annual Holiday Parade on Sunday, Dec. 8 in historic downtown Wilmington! The parade will begin at N. Front and Walnut streets at 5:40 p.m. The reviewing stand will be in Riverfront Park in the 00 block of N. Water Street.

Traditional tree lighting

The Rotary Wheel at Greenfield Lake is the new site for the city’s long-standing tree lighting tradition. The celebration will kick off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the tree lighting and Santa's arrival. At 6:30 p.m., the holiday movie “A Christmas Story” will be shown at the Greenfield Amphitheater. The entire event is free and open to the public.

Downtown tree lighting Nov. 29

The historic downtown tree lighting will take place on Friday, Nov. 29 at the parking lot on the corner of Water and Princess streets, with entertainment starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is presented by the Downtown Business Alliance (DBA)  and the City of Wilmington‘s Recreation & Downtown Services Division.

Wilmington a Coast Guard city again

On Nov. 26, the City of Wilmington became a Coast Guard City for the third time. US Congressman Mike McIntyre, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and representatives from the US Coast Guard were on hand for the recertification ceremony which took place in City Hall.

New holiday tradition!

The Rotary Wheel at Greenfield Lake is the new site for the city’s long-standing holiday tree lighting tradition, including a celebration coordinated with the local Rotary Club. The old tree at the Sweeney Water Plant has lost almost all its foliage, is no longer capable of supporting lights and has limited access.

Community meeting on gang violence
Approximately 175 people met in City Hall on Nov. 4 for the first of several community conversations about gang violence in Wilmington. Attendees heard first-hand from reformed gang members who are trying to help the community, as well as others who are mentoring at-risk youth.

Bring your little ghost or goblin out for some fall fun! The Fit For Fun Center is holding their annual fun fall festival on Oct. 25 and the Great Pumpkin Hunt at Maides Park will take place on Nov. 2.
