Community meeting on gang violence

On Wednesday, UNCW and the City of Wilmington will host a panel of UNCW faculty experts who will discuss gun violence. Approximately 175 people met in City Hall on Nov. 4 for the first of several community conversations about gang violence in Wilmington. Attendees heard first-hand from reformed gang members who are trying to help the community, as well as others who are mentoring at-risk youth.

P.A.L. Hoops seeks players

The WPD is recruiting 8-10 year olds for the 2013-14 season of Police Athletic League (PAL). PAL is a proactive community policing effort that uses sports as a tool to promote gang resistance and awareness.

Gun buy-backs Saturday
Three churches will host a Gun Buy-Back effort sponsored by LINC Inc. and supported by WPD, Pender County and NHC Sheriff's Office on Saturday, August 24th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Individuals who turn in guns will be offered $100 for working handguns and $200 for assault weapons. [Read more...]

Midnight basketball is back at the MLK, Jr. Community Center. The program is free and includes food, an educational session and BASKETBALL! Each Friday from 8 pm to midnight through August 23.
